Students Ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 5

Age & Grade Levels

We have five elementary classes in the Elementary Academic Program: kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, and a combination Grade 4 & 5.

Kindergarten Starting Age:  Students turning five years old on or before September 30 will start kindergarten. 

School Hours & Break Times

The school day starts at 8 a.m. with student devotions and ends at 3:20 p.m. There are two recesses or break times. The morning recess is from 10 a.m. to 10:25 a.m. and is supervised by Academy staff. The ship-wide lunch break is from 12 p.m. to 12:55 p.m. During this time, students are released from school to enjoy lunch as a family. School is operational from Monday to Friday. 

The Africa Mercy Academy

The Africa Mercy Academy has a team of five full-time elementary teachers, with one teacher for each class. We also have two specialist teachers who teach French, technology, and physical education from kindergarten to Grade 12. In addition, we have a number of part-time teachers who offer electives and specials for the students. 

The student to teacher ratio will not exceed 6:1 in the kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 classes. In the Grade 4 & 5 class, the student to teacher ratio will not exceed 10:1.

The Global Mercy Academy

The Global Mercy Academy has a team of five full-time elementary teachers, with one teacher for each class. We also have three specialist teachers who teach French, physical education and life skills, and technology from kindergarten to Grade 12. In addition, we have a number of part-time teachers who offer electives and specials for the students. 

The student to teacher ratio will not exceed 10:1 in the kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 classes. In the Grade 4 & 5 class, the student to teacher ratio will not exceed 14:1.

Instruction Time

Each elementary grade has 35 forty-five-minute lessons per week.

In addition to the core subjects, we offer additional electives or specials in six different areas:

  • Life Skills

  • Creative Arts (Music, Arts, and Drama)
