Story of the Mercy Ships Academy
Two Ships. Two Schools. One Mission & Vision.
The Mercy Ships Academy is one school with multiple locations. The Academy’s central administration is located at the Mercy Ships International Support Center in Lindale, Texas. From this central operation, the Academy Director, Assistant Director, and Data and Systems Manager support both schools in the areas of recruiting and staffing, student admissions, accreditation standards administration, and curriculum development.
The Africa Mercy Academy is located onboard the Africa Mercy, and serves the crew’s long-term families. The Africa Mercy Academy has a maximum enrollment of 65 students from preschool to Grade 12, with a team of 12 teachers led by the Principal. There are a total of nine classrooms, in addition to the school library, computer island, Academy office, science lab area, outside play deck, and swimming pool. As technology is a priority for our academic program, students within the Africa Mercy Academy enjoy interactive digital whiteboards in all classrooms. Students in Grades 6-12 also have a one-to-one laptop program with WiFi internet access.
The Global Mercy Academy is located onboard the Global Mercy, and serves the crew’s long-term families. The Global Mercy Academy has a maximum enrollment of 110 students from preschool to Grade 12, with a team of 14 teachers led by the Principal. There are a total of 12 classrooms, in addition to the school library, computer lab, Academy office, science lab, conference room, outside play area, ball court, swimming pool, and auditorium. As technology is a priority for our academic program, students within the Global Mercy Academy enjoy interactive digital whiteboards in all classrooms. Students in Grades 6-12 have a one-to-one laptop program with WiFi internet access, and surround sound in all classrooms.
In 2021, the Mercy Ships Academy began the process of upgrading its current international school accreditation with the Association of Christian Schools International and Middle States College and Schools to a systems accreditation. If successful, this upgrade ensures that all students enrolled in the Mercy Ships Academy will benefit from the high standard of education that meets the internationally recognized and monitored standard of these two organizations. This will enable students to transfer easily between the ships and their home countries, both when they arrive and when they return.
